Digital Skills
Mission
Digital skills are key to a modern society. However, around 3.5 million people in Austria still lack these basic skills. The Digital Skills Initiative Austria is committed to closing this gap.
Goal
By 2030, everyone in Austria should have basic digital skills. This will open up opportunities, improve quality of life, boost innovation, and create a sustainable economy.

Digital Skills Initiative Austria
The Digital Skills Initiative (DKO), developed by BKA, BMWET, BMB, BMFWF and BMASGPK, defines its goals as increasing basic digital skills of citizens and strengthening IT skills for the economic sector. Surveys such as the European DESI Index show the need for action in Austria. In order for Austria to benefit from the economic and ecological advantages of digitisation, the breadth and depth of digital skills in society, business and administration are indispensable.
The "Digital Skills Initiative Austria", a campaign under the European umbrella of the "Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition" (DSJC), the Austrian government wants to make Austria one of the European pioneers in the field of digital skills and establish a strong European axis.
Austrian Model for Digital Competence
Digital competences are one of the eight key competences for lifelong learning of the European Union.
The Austrian Framework of Reference for Digital Competence is a framework model that describes individual digital competences in different areas and at different levels. This way, it enables all stakeholders to have a clear understanding of digital competences while facilitating greater transparency and targeted qualification.
Digital Everywhere ("Digital Überall")
A total of 4,500 free "Digital Everywhere" workshops are organised to support the people with digitisation. The workshops address five primary topics: digital education for senior citizens, e-government, online safety, living with increasing digitisation, and artificial intelligence.
"Digital Everywhere" is Austria's flagship project when it comes to the basic digitization of citizens. It has won the European Digital Skills Award in the category “Inclusion in the Digital World” in 2025.
