Digital Skills Initiative Austria

The Digital Skills Initiative (DKO), developed by BKA, BMWET, BMB, BMFWF and  BMASGPK, defines its goals as increasing basic digital skills of citizens and strengthening IT skills for the economic sector. Surveys such as the European DESI Index show the need for action in Austria. In order for Austria to benefit from the economic and ecological advantages of digitisation, the breadth and depth of digital skills in society, business and administration are indispensable.

The "Digital Skills Initiative Austria", a campaign under the European umbrella of the "Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition" (DSJC), the Austrian government wants to make Austria one of the European pioneers in the field of digital skills and establish a strong European axis.

Digital Everywhere ("Digital Überall")

A total of 4,500 free “Digital Everywhere” workshops support people in digitisation across five key topics: digital education for senior citizens, e-government, online safety, living in an increasingly digital world, and artificial intelligence.

All workshops (held in German) can be viewed and booked directly—online or by phone—via our workshop database, which is updated regularly. Since June 2025, municipalities can also book up to three free workshops through the same simple process: after selecting a workshop and submitting a booking request to the adult education provider, a date is arranged, and the municipality only needs to provide a venue and handle participant communication.

In the long run, mastering digital skills is vital for active participation in today’s modern, digital society - both for personal growth or professional success. This is where we come in. Our Digital Skills Initiative opens the door to a future where digital confidence and competence are the keys to success.

Teaching digital skills

The aim is to teach digital skills to everyone. The cross-departmental digital skills campaign ensures that the digital skills of citizens are increased in a joint strategy.

The goal is to make Austrians digitally fit by 2030. The measures range from the funding of future training and further education for all interested parties to a standardised competence level and certification system.

Strengthen basic digital skills

The aim is to equip as many people in Austria as possible with basic digital skills. To reach this goal the "Digital Skills Initiative"  bundles quality-assured teaching of basic digital skills in the population and in various fields of action (primarily ICT experts, education, citizens, employees, companies and public administration).

Increase proportion of IT specialists

Another aim is to increase the proportion of IT specialists and especially female IT specialists.
